THE BOMA YANGU AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT

The Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Project in Mukuru, Nairobi, is a government initiative aimed at tackling Kenya’s housing deficit by providing 13,248 affordable units (bedsitters, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom homes) to low-income earners. President William Ruto emphasized its role in slum upgrading, job creation (over 2.7 million jobs in five years), and economic growth.

Key features include:

  • Rent-to-own scheme: Monthly payments of KSh 3,000–7,000 over 25 years.

  • Eligibility: Kenyan citizens aged 18+, with allocation via randomized balloting, prioritizing families and vulnerable groups.

  • Challenges: Complaints of water shortages, insecurity, and mismanagement in existing estates highlight the need for better infrastructure and oversight.

The project aims to transform Mukuru into a model community, though sustained efforts are required to address implementation gaps and ensure long-term success.
